What is a Pluot?

Wow! Never heard of this one. A pluot is a cross between a plum and an apricot. Yet there is a variation of these cross-bred fruits called a plumcot. How do we tell the difference. Leave it up to Jane Tunks from the San Francisco Chronicle to explain this to us. Well, when they say to eat more fruit, I can now say "I ate two" when I eat one pluot.

Mommy Blogs-An "Online Force"

It is the perception that a catchy wacky domain name is what it takes to cash-in into the revenue that circulates in the world wide web. That can be true for a real minority, considering the millions of domain names out there however, the real driving force that determines the success of an internet entity has a lot to do with vision, heart and passion of the creator. Take for instance the blogs. Most bloggers do not necessarily own wacky, expensive domain names nor do they own millions of products of inventory, however, they are dedicated and committed to sharing their thoughts, and realize that their views can be valuable. Several recent articles in the internet reveal how Mommies are creating a significant presence in the blogging world. An article by Oscar Gallaga describes how Mom bloggers are becoming an online force and are actually cashing in on their views.

One has to realize that there is an analogy between real estate and the world wide web. Just like real estate developing, a website gets developed and created, and with the help of social networking circles traffic can be created. This may be an oversimplification but just like any endeavor there is a process, and someone has to start somewhere.

ICANN Expands Top Level Domains - A year ago

It has been a year since the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers(ICANN)approved a measure allowing businesses to apply for any top-level domain they can think of. So instead of the standard .com, .net, .org or .uk domain names, businesses would now be allowed to come up with their own domain suffix such as .soap or .cars, or whatever whaky suffix they can come-up with. There were articles claiming that this measure would open a Pandora's Box of new top level domains(TLD). Some have expressed concern that the confusions could result in preying of consumers by scammers or via cybersquatting. It seems the cost of applying and registering a suffix has deterred businesses from pursuing this. The ICANN says it will cost between $100,000 to $500,000 to register a new suffix. So far there has not been an explosion of applications, or maybe we just do not know. For now, we are just .waiting!

Art Gets Attention

We were driving on our way home I-75 north and passing through Lexington, Kentucky when I saw this trailer being pulled. It's intense artwork caught my attention and made me follow it for awhile to figure out what it was about.

Well it was about a company that customizes motorcycles but more importantly it did what it was supposed to do- catch ones attention and at the same time promote its website.

Good job www.ledsledcustoms.com. on your newly launched website.

Drive Daily Visits

A friend recently shared his blog to me today. It had awesome historical information but it struck me as as having a load of information to read in one sitting. Most internet surfers have a very short attention span, and get their information based on visual cues. If subjected to multiple paragraphs and voluminous information with small fonts and sparce visual aids, it automatically programs the reader to move on unless they are fully invested into the subject matter.

It is more helpful to break down the information small snips of daily blogs. It gives the website or blog a sense of daily freshness, and allows for more frequent visitors. Is it not the goal to drive more traffic into your website?

Treat Domain Names like Real Estate

Valerie Lynn has a great article on domaininformer.com in business of domains as analogous to the real estate business. Some real investors like to buy and hold, then wait for its value to go up, then sell. This holds true for some domainers who hold on to domain names and then sell it when it has value. Then there are domain owners, who are like real estate investors, who develop domains into a functional website, which creates increase in domain value via various mechanisms - its increased traffic, which attracts ads, and revenue generated via PPC from ads, and by eventually selling the income generating site.

Be a Master of you Domain

The Winnipeg Sun reported of 2 Members of Parliament(MP) in Canada whose names were grabbed and rerouted to porn or drug-related websites. Apparently the domain names to their websites had expired and were snatched and re-routed. A lot of people really take things for granted, like their names or business names, not realizing that there ill-intentioned people out their who would take every opportunity to enhance their ventures. It is ironic that my blog 5 days ago I discussed how important it is to protect your name.

It is foreseeable in the near future that ill-intentioned people will be grabbing domains of ordinary people, (e.g. a chirpopractor, lawyer or accountant etc), and do the same thing.

Again, protect your name. Be the master of your domain.

Protect your Name

There are still businesses out there that have not protected their business name in the domain arena.

Some are mom and pop businesses who do not think they need a website. They are busy enough and think that having a website is just another hassle. Little do they realize that their business' name already has great value and that registering it as a domain name is essential.

They may come to realize that their name may have been snagged and squatted on, or already being used to re-route to other websites such as their competition or even worse to some adult website. Yikes!!!

It is thus a must, if you already have a thriving and successful business, and your domain is still available, to grab, register, take possession and protect it.

You have worked so hard to create a name with such value and credibility. Protect it. Register now.

Domain Value

What is a website domain to you.

Do you see it as a place to hang-out, a place to make friends or a place to buy $tuff. Do you see it as something COOL or something intriguing that you have to check it out. Do you see it as a place to learn or simply have FuN.

Do you see where I am getting at. Can you grasp the concept that owning domain names is like owning real estate. We go to various websites as "places" and it is intriguing how we can create value to a domain so that one would want to own it or go to it. Just like any place.

Obviously, it is not that simple. Owning a domain is not the end but creating value to a domain name is the goal.

It is exciting to share how we can create value to domains that we can own.
